Hi Team Stony Tennis
I hope you have all had a wonderful start to the new year and I can safely say that it's been a very busy one for Team Stony Tennis. I would like to let you know about a few of the things that have been happening and are coming up at the club....plus a special announcement!
As you know, we offer a free trial to anyone who wants to get involved in tennis and I am delighted to see new faces joining us. We are not going to put on any more sessions at the moment but I would love to know if you are looking for any other sessions, whether it is group coaching, individual lessons or hitting sessions. Maybe the current times don’t work for you or you want to do more. Please just reply to this email and I will be happy to help.
I would like to start an Adult Intermediate session on Mondays from 7.30-9pm with Coach Jason. I have a couple of people interested but I need 4 to get it going. If you are a club level player and want to train on a weekly basis to improve both technically and tactically then please let me know and I will share more details.
I have also been doing a lot of video analysis with players recently. By filming the player I am able to analyse their strokes in slow-mo and relay this information back to them. It's been amazing to see people's reactions when they look at themselves playing and realising what they think they are doing is not what they're doing! The other great thing about filming is that the player can keep a copy to refer to while they practise on their own or with the partner. At the moment there are several people that I am helping on an ad-hoc basis but if anyone would like to know more or how to book a session then please let me know.
This month I started to support Head Coaches at other clubs and I launched my new programme, the ‘Head Coach Webinar Series’. It has been a great success and a pleasure to share some of the methods and systems I have developed here at Stony to help improve other people's programmes. I'm getting to a stage in my career where I want to educate others so that tennis can grow and thrive beyond our club.
On 12th February, I am hosting a seminar for coaches with guest presenter Keith Reynolds, who has produced 25 national champions. Keith took me to my first LTA qualification when I was 19! He has been a tremendous influence over my coaching career and it brings me great pleasure to enable him to present to our team and other local coaches. Keith is a massive fan of Team Stony Tennis and has visited the club on several occasions. He said that club reminds him of his club when it was at its most successful which is lovely to hear.
This February half term we won't be running any camps but the programme will be running right through. If anyone would like additional sessions during the half term week then we can organise these with one of the coaches. I will be away during half term in Majorca with four players at a training camp with the former coach to Rafael Nadal and I can't wait to see the sun and have some warmer weather!
Just to let you know, I've also taken on a new member of staff to help with social media. It is really important to publicise the great work, news and activity that regularly happens at our wonderful club and Andy will regularly post via our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/teamstonytennis and Instagram account @teamstonytennis. Please be sure to follow our channels, like, comment and share, so we can tell the whole world about what we get up to.
Now for some very sad news. Unfortunately Coach Richards' mother has been diagnosed with breast cancer and leukemia. I am sure that you will join me in support of Richard while he manages the situation. Richard is a strong character and recently I shared his mother's crowdfunding page via WhatsApp. I am absolutely outstanded by the wonderful generosity shown by everyone in Team Stony Tennis as within a day of posting, his fundraising efforts went up by around £1500. No matter how much people donated, I know that Richard has been very touched by this but if you would like to know more or to help, then please click here: https://www.gofundme.com/f/xnp33n-my-mother
One of the great things about our juniors is the amount of competition they are playing on a weekly basis. We have lots of players travelling all over the place competing at various levels. For me, competition is crucial for improvement and learning to play the game. Whether you win or lose is not the most important thing, especially in the development stages, but by being able to compete you understand the flow of matches, tactics to execute and the mental challenges that develop character. Again, by following our social channels you'll be able to see how the players are doing on a weekly basis but if your player is competing then please let us know via the WhatsApp groups.
If you are not aware of the Team Stony Parents Club, then I would advise that all parents join it. The club is free and I deliver 6 workshops a year to help inform and educate parents on various aspects of their child's tennis journey from a parents’ perspective. The next workshop is on Tuesday the 12th March at 9pm and is done online. Please reply to this email if you would like to join the club.
Every Thursday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Coach Lam runs junior club night. During this session people can drop in and leave anytime they wish but it's a great opportunity for all junior club members to have fun while playing games and social competition. If you are not a member of the club then you can come and try the session with the view to hopefully join. For more details please go to www.ssltc.co.uk.
I am looking to improve the level of 8 and under players at the club and I run a session on Mondays from 5-6.30pm called the ‘Young Guns’ . This session is in addition to any weekly sessions the players are doing in the development programme or individually and the objective is to prepare the players to reach County level. If your child is interested in joining the programme then please let me know.
With Easter not that far away, I wanted to tell you about our plans. We have been awarded an LTA Grade 3 regional tournament from Sunday 31st March to Saturday 6th April. This prestigious event will attract players from County to national level from all over the region and afar. The competition age group categories will range from 8&U through to men and women's draws. This will mean that there will be limited access to courts for members during this period but if you are not involved in competing I would highly recommend you come along and watch some of the wonderful tennis that will be on display. There will be no camps during this week either but our MORE THAN JUST TENNIS camps will return during the second week of Easter from Monday 8th April to Friday 12th April.
And finally, I wanted to tell you that I am getting married! I have been with Alison for 11 years and engaged for 7, but with covid ruining our initial plans, we have finally got around to setting a date on Saturday 30th March. We are getting married locally and I will be around during the Grade 3 tournament, but will then be away from 8th April for two weeks.
Please get in touch if there is anything we can do for you and I look forward to seeing you soon.
Happy tennising!
