Hi Team Stony Tennis
Starting to play tennis as an adult beginner offers a multitude of benefits, both physical and mental, and can enhance overall well-being. There are two major blocks for adults getting into tennis. The first is making the time with a busy work and family schedule and the second is the thought of feeling like everyone is much better than you and you don’t want to look silly.
To address the second issue, the reality is that we have beginner adults joining us all the time. Some have never played before, some haven’t played since school and others are looking for something fun and social that will help them develop their skills. Our teaching methods enable everyone to be involved and progress at their rate.
The first issue of ‘time’ is like any investment…if it’s worth it, you make it happen. We have sessions running on various days and times, so it’s about working out the best way for you to get involved. We have sessions from 7.30-9pm in the evenings, a 10.30am-12pm session on a Friday and on Saturday mornings, when we have sessions for the kids from 9.30-10.30am, we also run an adult session so you can all play at the same time.
Tennis provides a full-body workout that improves cardiovascular health, muscle strength, flexibility, and endurance. Regular tennis sessions help burn calories, contributing to weight loss or maintenance and this sport enhances hand-eye coordination, agility, and overall balance, which are essential for daily activities and can prevent falls as one ages.
But as well as the physical benefits there are huge mental benefits too. By playing a physical activity like tennis, is known to reduce stress levels by releasing endorphins, the body's natural mood elevators. Tennis requires strategic thinking and quick decision-making, which can improve cognitive functions such as concentration, memory, and problem-solving skills. Learning a new skill and seeing improvement over time can also boost self-esteem and confidence.
The social benefits of this sport are incredible! I have met so many great people and lifelong friends through tennis. Back in 2001, when I was coaching at Shenley Leisure Centre, two adults who didn’t know each other before joining my course eventually became a couple and are enjoying their life together but still playing tennis at the club. This really was a ‘tennis match’ with lots of ‘love’!
Tennis is a social sport that can help adults meet new people, build friendships, and become part of a community, which is especially beneficial for mental health. It can also be a family-friendly activity that promotes bonding and shared experiences among family members. By engaging in a fun activity like tennis can bring joy and satisfaction, contributing to overall happiness.
I see many people playing tennis into their eighties, and it is no coincidence that tennis has played a part in this. The long-term health benefits are invaluable with regular physical activity helping reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Studies have shown that people who play tennis regularly tend to live longer, healthier lives.
So, what is stopping you?
We have a great club with great facilities and coaches…we even lend rackets to those who don’t have one.
Starting tennis as an adult beginner is not just about learning a sport; it's about improving overall quality of life through physical activity, mental engagement, social interaction, and emotional satisfaction.
