Club Finals - Sunday 11th September

This is the highlight of our Tennis year and give our members a chance to watch the best players at our club battle it out in the various finals. It is also a chance to socialize with our well stocked bar, bbq, soft drinks and ice creams, as well as a chance to join in the action. Our coaching staff are running various clinics from 1pm - so bring your rackets.
In the club house you will be able to meet our new racket stringer and get your rackets restrung while you wait. There will also be the chance to buy some great tennis kit.
Another major change from previous years is that we will be running Men’s and Ladies doubles and Junior (10yrs and under) tournaments on the day. It is open to everyone and there is no entry fee - just let us know in advance so we can put the draw together. We have a few places left for each tournament so find a partner and get in touch as soon as possible to avoid missing out.
Adults contact: mailto:sandaburn@hotmail.com.  Tournament starts at 11:30am
Juniors contact: mailto:john.cavill@tennisworks.net  Tournament starts at 9:00am
The adult finals will begin from 11:00am
The final order of play has not been completed as there are still a few semi finals to be played.
The junior finals will begin from 9:00am
So please join us during the day to support the club and help celebrate another great year of Tennis at Stony Stratford.
New Director of Tennis for Stony
I have some important news about the next stage in the development of our Coaching Programmes for all at Stony with the establishment of a new Director of Tennis. SSLTC is an expanding club and as you may recall from newsletters and past AGMs, with the stated goal of being the premier family club in the area providing competitive tennis to all abilities up to highest county level.

We have three main tactics to achieve this namely (a) to maintain steady and improving financials to support our growth, (b) to steadily increase the value of membership through more opportunities for peer group tennis and particularly expansion of the coaching programme and (c) to improve the retention of our existing members.

We have come a long way over the past ten years with our excellent courts and clubhouse. We have a strong membership of 450 that has grown by around 15% in the last few years. John Skinner as Head Coach has brought a welcoming atmosphere to the club delivering coaching both to adults and juniors. However to remain as the premier family club, we cannot stand still and should continue to look for opportunities to improve and grow. We have great plans to increase the membership value with more opportunities for tennis, coaching, floodlighting and ultimately (subject to funds and planning) covered courts.

Three years ago we set up a group of people to look specifically at both coaching and juniors at the club. The first change came quickly to support John Skinner, introducing the partnership with John Cavill to coach performance juniors and the return of Sue Evans covering many areas but in particular, the youngest children and Adult improver classes. These moves have proved very successful. We now have some of the best juniors not only in the region but also in the country. The numbers of juniors feeding up into other programmes has increased and most encouragingly, the support John Skinner and Sue have received through the Adult improver classes is now seeing benefits by feeding into our regular club-nights.

Since these initial changes, a team led by David Marchant and including all the coaching staff, Darrell Cooke, Claus Cunild and myself, have been planning hard for the next phase for coaching at the club. Collectively we visited or talked to over 100 other tennis clubs. We had discussions not just with the LTA but also other sporting bodies including Rugby, Rounders, Hockey and Cricket to build up a picture of what is coaching best practice in a club such as ours. The resulting plan was presented to the Committee and approved in January 2010. Much of that plan has been covered before in newsletters or at the last two AGMs, but at a high level included:

  • Establish a clear set of objectives and measurements for the coaching team
  • Maximising court usage by expanding the tennis coaching programme for all
  • Increase junior court time with clear development pathways and improve the club atmosphere for them, with a "hang around factor”
  • Encourage more competition and recognise achievement
  • Provide better supporting information for parents of children
  • Develop a broader coaching structure and governance through the appointment of a Director of Tennis to run and administer the whole coaching programme and the coaches.
For the past 18 months the team have been working towards achieving those new coaching objectives. Significantly it has become clear during this time that these changes are pretty much a pre-requisite for a club such as ours to maintain Clubmark status and attract the support and funding that will be necessary for some of the more ambitious plans such as covered courts. We have to make the changes if we are to continue to be considered the premier club in our region and effectively act as a satellite to high performance centres such as Halton.

It is therefore with great pleasure that I announce the appointment this week of John Cavill of Tennis Works to provide the services of the new Director of Tennis at Stony. This new role will replace the Head Coach position that John Skinner has held for the past seven years and represents a significant expansion of responsibilities around the coaching programme development. Furthermore the new role is structured in such a way that it will provide more opportunity for the coaching team but at a lower cost to the club. I’m sure you would like to join me in thanking John Skinner for the excellent contribution he has made to the club over that those past seven years. He bought a period of much needed stability and his hard work and planning input has helped us get ready for this next step. I hope you will join us to formally thank John at one of the club events very soon.

Naturally there is a transition period during which John Skinner will be handing over to John Cavill. John Skinner will continue with his commitments until Saturday the 16th July at which point John Cavill will have sole responsibility for the Coaching Programme. Summer Camps will commence on the 24th July and the new Coaching Programme will start in September. I know that John Cavill and Tennis Works are delighted to have taken up this role at Stony and they are committed to helping keep Stony the premier club in the region. John, with the help of his business partner Melvyn Jones are busy planning the strategy to achieve this with input from the all of us who have been involved in this process and in particular the current coaching team of John Skinner and Sue Evans. I know that they will be writing to everyone separately to introduce themselves and seek your input.

I would also like to thank David Marchant who has been absolutely pivotal in making all of this possible. He has led the team to define the strategy and objectives, he personally visited the vast majority of those 100 clubs and has both led the request for proposals and contracting stages. Clearly he has not rested on the laurels of his 2010 Club person of the Year award.

In the meantime if you would like to provide any feedback or wish to help us with the club plans please let me know.

Regards,
Simon Burn

Jo Durie to visit SSLTC - Sunday 4th October
For those who remember British tennis in the 1980s there is one name everyone talked about... Jo Durie. She reached the semi-finals of the French Open and US Open in 1983. She was also the Quarter-finalist in Australia in 1983 and at Wimbledon in 1984 where she beat Steffi Graf in the 4th round. Since her retirement from tennis in 1995, no other British lady has come near to her achievements and she now enjoys commentating with the BBC and Eurosport whilst working with her long standing coach, Alan Jones, at the FC** Academy at Dukes Meadow in London.

On Sunday 4th October between 2 and 4pm, they will be working with local tennis talent from the Cavill Academy, who are based at Stony Stratford Tennis Club. The players will endure a 2-hour session from the internationally experienced coaches. The Cavill Academy coaches will also be working alongside Jo and Alan, to share and discuss opinions that will help advance the players in the future.

Stony Stratford Tennis Club, one of Bucks premier tennis clubs, is welcoming anyone to come along and see Alan and Jo in action with the players.
Club Chairman, Simon Burn, said, This is a wonderful opportunity for the whole of Milton Keynes and the surrounding areas to come see the past and the future of tennis talent in one place. Jo and Alans results speak for themselves and we are delighted that they can come and inspire Milton Keynes young talent to hopefully go on to achieve great things. Stony Stratford Tennis Club is a great place to be, whatever level of tennis you play or even if you want to get started. Everyone is welcome to come and see who we are and what we are about.

Wimbledon Quarter-Finalists (and other Vets ramblings)
The recently (but perfectly formed) Men's Vets squad at SSLTC have been enjoying some success over the summer months. The SSLTC team reached the L16 of the National Vets two pair knock-out, before being exactly that, knocked out by Leicester. The valiant team of Adrian O'Reilly / Mark Meagrow and Simon Burn / Brian Haywarad, put up a good fight but were always on a mission to avoid the double bagel against the National #3 seeds.

Building on their success, in August Mark, Simon and Brian joined by Ian Spanswick entered the British Grass Court Championship to be held in London. Qualifying was at Raynes Park for entry into the main draw to be held at Wimbledon on the hallowed grass, week commencing 10th August. Justifying his number two Bucks ranking in the age group, only Brian made it through to the main draw of the singles, unfortunately meeting some pretty stiff opposition in the first round.
The doubles pairings fared a little better and after some quick chatting up of the tournament referee, Alan Mills, both Ian/Brian and Mark/Simon got top billing on Courts 14 and 15 respectively, sandwiched between Number One and the Centre Courts. Both pairs won through to the Quarter-Finals where the fairy tale came to an abrupt end, Mark/Simon going out to the #1 seeds whilst Ian/Brian fought hard against the #3.

Spurred on by their success the boys travelled down to Maidenhead on the weekend of 26/27th September for the Maidenhead Vets and dominated the whole event. Ian got to the final of the Men's 45 singles, Brian won the Men's 45 singles plate and Mark & Adrian beat Brian & Ian in the final of the Men's 45 Doubles. I promised to Brian not to mention his opponent in final of the Plate. A 64 year old who after several hours at one set all said he didnt have long left on this planet so didnt want to spend the majority of it out here with Brian and walked off to live a little.

Onwards and upwards. More success for the Vets over the winter we hope with both Men's and Ladies teams in new leagues. You can find pictures from Wimbledon and Maidenhead in the Club Gallery.

Social Events for January '09
As an alternative to sheltering at home from the freezing cold, have a look at a couple of social events coming up in the second half of January.

On Sunday 18th January, Ben Westlake, an U16 member and regular at Junior nights and Friday teenage tennis, is performing on clarinet supported by the Cornerstone Chamber Orchestra of Abigail Burrows playing flute, Daniel de-Fry on the Harp and Adrian Boynton conducting. Since Ben took up the clarinet at the age of eight he has excelled, winning many national competitions and performs concertos regularly including many chamber music performances and solo recitals. Ben has played in many orchestras including the National Children's Orchestra in 2005 (where he was one of the first Lever Hulme Scholars), the CBSO Youth Orchestra from 2005-7 (who gave him a seat when he was 12 years old), and he is currently principal clarinet in the National Youth Chamber Orchestra. Ben also appeared on BBC2's Classical Star programme in 2007, was featured a lot and is now often recognised in the street. Ben currently studies clarinet with Karl Leister in Berlin. Peter Stark - Professor of Conducting, Royal College of Music said "I recommend him, without reservation, to anyone who wants to see young talent at its best."

An advertising poster can be found on the download section of this website, under Social Events, with more details. Alternatively you can visit Ben's website at www.benwestlake.co.uk where you will also find details of his latest CD. The evening begins at 7pm at the Church of Christ the Cornerstone, Milton Keynes with a pre-concert talk immediately followed by the performance. Tickets can be bought at the door for 12.50 adult or 5.00 child.

Our second event is a return of SSLTC's social Bridge Evenings on Friday 23rd January. The emphasis is on social and you are encouraged (read, we insist!) to bring a bottle of wine. Bidding comes so much easier after a glass! The evening is from 7pm, with tea, coffee and a sausage in a roll for snacks. The cost is 10 a pair towards club funds. If you are interested in a bit of a laugh and some good company over a few hands, call Alicia Lilley on 267295 or email her at alicia@online.rednet.co.uk, no later than Monday 19 Jan. A advertising poster can also be found on the download section of this website, under Social Events.

We have ClubMark!!!
The Club Committee are delighted to announce that the LTA have awarded Stony Stratford Tennis Club with the coverted ClubMark status on Wednesday 24th September. This is a great recognition by the LTA of SSLTCs success as a club. Congratulations and thanks especially to Sharon Marchant, our club secretary who has project managed the effort, and coordinated the input of members of the committee. Sharon met with the LTA's assesor, Abbie Lench, this morning and we obviously passed with flying colours. Thank you also to Abbie for her preliminar assessment last month to ensure we were on track, and to John Skinner, Brian Berrill, John Taylor and Simon Burn for all their work compiling the reports.

The LTA have developed Tennis Clubmark to recognise and reward clubs for the important contribution they make in developing tennis players and to British tennis in general. Other sports have similar programmes for their clubs, for example ClubFirst in the Hockey world. Tennis Clubmark is the LTAs club accreditation programme. Achieving Tennis Clubmark means the LTA endorses and supports the tennis programmes SSLTC delivers on court, and the policies and procedures we have in place off court. These are crucial to ensuring that SSLTC is managed effectively and that we provide a safe environment for junior members to enjoy and play tennis.

Tennis Clubmark provides a framework to help clubs such as ours improve ourselves, and to ensure that their programmes, policies and procedures are all in line with best practice. In achieving Tennis Clubmark we are demonstrating our contribution to the delivery of the Blueprint, by improving the quality of our club, our coaches that work within SSLTC and the competition that SSLTC delivers.

Both the Junior and Senior Club Championship finals took place on Sunday 7th September. After the initial dampish start, the sun even came out for brief periods allowing a small crowd to assemble, some without raincoats!

New SSLTC Website launched (Issued 9/7/08)
If you reading this you are obviously aware that the SSLTC website is back! The Totaltennis network died a death in March. Since then we have had a holding site with just a couple of pages out under our web address so we were at least contactable. Our new website finally went live in mid July. Over the next few months you will see more articles added so that it becomes more and more useful to our club members with time.

Notable improvements are a new calendar. We will endeavour to keep this up to date including the number of courts booked out for each event. In time we will be able to have downloads and external links. In the more distant future there will be a secure membership area with contact details, ability to renew membership online, purchase from John's tennis equipment shop, an enhanced calendar and loads more.

The committee would like thank:

  1. Janice Roach and Roger Draper for helping us retrieve our data from the old totaltennis site,
  2. to Anne Irwin for her advice on all those trial sites we looked at,
  3. to Stuart Freestone of Freestone Creative for his help with the Home Page banner image and
  4. of course Gwyneth and Martin Smith from Absolute Micro Communications in Walnut Tree that are providing the web application and hosting services.

Social Mixed Sunday nights (Issued 9/7/08)
There have been a number of suggestions and comments on the fact, with all the other opportunities for peer group tennis, club nights have suffered. Club nights remain very important to us, as a family and mixed club, as it is one of the key opportunities for mixed tennis helping to prevent the mens and ladies becoming separate sections within a club. To this end Sunday evening club nights were designated Mixed Sunday evenings with the emphasis on Mixed Doubles. To help get things moving all those attending are encouraged to bring a bottle to put the social back into our Mixed tennis. Attendance has improved and there has been some very competitive tennis (particularly when he sun has shone). Make sure you come down and join us and bring a bottle (just in case we forget ours!)

Once a month we get the new BBQ out too. The future dates for the BBQ are July 20th, August 17th and September 21st. (so you have advance warning as Budgens I think closes at 4pm). Wednesday club nights remain unchanged. Make sure you remember to put a bottle in your racket bag for the 20th and we look forward to seeing you then.
